Futures broker margin rates & commissions

Day-trading margins for the E-mini and Micro E-mini S&P 500, round-turn commissions, platform fees and minimum deposits at the major futures brokers — every number read from the broker's own site on . Margins change without notice; treat this as the shape of the market, then verify.

The short version

As of July 29, 2026, discount futures brokers advertise day-trading margins of $400–$500 for the E-mini S&P 500 (ES) and $40–$50 for the Micro (MES) — versus exchange initial margins in the thousands. Commissions cluster around $0.25–$0.39 per side for micros and $0.75–$1.29 per side for e-minis before exchange fees. The real differences are platform fees (NinjaTrader discounts commissions if you buy its platform license), account minimums ($0–$2,000), and how aggressively a broker raises margins around news events.

*Tradovate's marketing headline says "$50 day trading margins," but its live margin table on July 29, 2026 showed ES $2,000 / MES $200, alongside a notice about raised margins around economic news — a good illustration of why intraday margins are a promotional number, not a guarantee. How to read these numbers

Day margin vs exchange margin
The exchange (CME) sets initial and maintenance margins per contract — thousands of dollars for ES. A broker's day-trading margin is its own, lower, intraday requirement, valid only while your position is open during regular hours and revoked near the close and around news. Hold overnight and full exchange margin applies. A $400 ES day margin is roughly 30:1 effective intraday leverage on a contract moving thousands of dollars a day — see the leverage calculator for what that does to an account.
Commission math
Commissions are quoted per side, so a round turn is double, plus exchange and regulatory fees (typically ≈$1.30–$1.60 per side on e-minis, less on micros). At NinjaTrader's free tier, one MES round turn ≈ $0.78 commission + fees; the lifetime license drops it to $0.18 + fees — the license only pays for itself at volume. Work per-trade breakeven with the tick value calculator.
Margin calls don't wait
Discount brokers auto-liquidate intraday positions that breach margin, usually with a fee. The lower the day margin you use, the closer your liquidation point sits to normal noise — check contract tick sizes on the contract specification pages before sizing to a margin number.

FAQ

Which futures broker has the lowest day-trading margin?
Among published rates on July 29, 2026: AMP and Optimus at $400 for ES ($40/$50 for MES), NinjaTrader at $500/$50. Interactive Brokers publishes no flat intraday rate, and Tradovate's live table was well above its headline. Lowest margin means earliest auto-liquidation — it is a risk setting, not a discount.
What does it actually cost to trade one micro contract?
Commission ($0.09–$0.39 per side depending on broker and plan) plus exchange and regulatory fees, so roughly $1–$2 per round turn all-in at most brokers — against a Micro E-mini S&P tick value of $1.25. A one-tick scalp loses money at most retail commission tiers; the futures calculator makes the breakeven explicit.
Do these brokers charge for data?
Real-time CME data is a separate exchange fee at every broker (waived or bundled only in promos). Delayed data is generally free. The COT data on this site is weekly CFTC data and free regardless of broker.
